THE AFRICAN ELEPHANT POPULATION MAY HAVE DECLINED AS MUCH AS 95% IN THE PAST CENTURY. These majestic animals are on a path to extinction.
On average, AN ELEPHANT IS KILLED EVERY 15 MINUTES for its ivory.
China is the world’s biggest ivory consumer but THE UNITED STATES IS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE PROBLEM as well, with porous borders, loopholes in existing laws, and untold thousands of illegal ivory items for sale.
IT’S NOT JUST A THREAT TO WILDLIFE. Enormous profits generated by ivory sales are funding militant and terrorist groups and organized crime.
ELEPHANTS THINK. They are as brilliant as they are big. They can use tools and work together to solve problems.
ELEPHANTS FEEL. They live in tight-knit family groups and express love, fear, joy and compassion.
ELEPHANTS GRIEVE. They have been seen keeping vigil over the bodies of family members slain by poachers, even revisiting and gently caressing the bones years later.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) works around the world on every aspect of the elephant crisis – to stop the killing, stop the trafficking and stop the demand.
